The Taxus Stent, manufactured by Boston Scientific, is a drug eluting stent, also known as medicated or drug-coated stents that are intended to prevent restenosis (reblocking of the artery). Over six million patients receive stents all over the world. However, On July 2, 2004 Boston Scientific recalled 200 of its Taxus stent systems and then on two years later widened its recall to include 85,000 Taxus stent systems and 11,000 Taxus Express 2 stent systems.
The specific lots that are affected are the Taxus Express 2 Monorail (MR) Coronary Stent System, the Taxus Express 2 Over-The-Wire (OTW) Coronary Stent System, the Express 2 Monorail (MR) Coronary Stent System and the Express 2 Over-The-Wire (OTW) Coronary Stent System.
The Taxus stent defect that resulted in the recall involved a balloon used to expand the metal-mesh stents into place in a clogged coronary artery during angioplasty surgery. In some instances, the balloon failed to properly deflate, making it difficult to remove from the body. Boston Scientific Corporation currently relates at least 3 deaths and over 50 serious injuries to this defect.
Two recent studies have linked medicated stents with side effects such as thrombosis and necessary long-term antiplatelet medication in order to prevent thrombosis. The studies also found that the drug-coated stents may result in a higher death rate due to cardiac events such as heart attack when compared to metal stents without a drug coating. Blood clots may occur up to thirty days after the heart stent was implanted.
Besides serious blood clots in the stents, also known as stent thrombosis, patients may also be at risk for rupturing of the blood vessels, allergic reaction to drug coating, subacute thrombosis, a tear in the artery, clogging of the stent, or a heart attack.
